First Church members and friends have many opportunities to participate in groups that build and grow our community– intentionally and informally. Many of our organized groups come together around a topic of study, a prayer practice, or a process of spiritual formation.
First Feet — gathers at the church Saturdays for a morning walk along the lakefront followed by coffee in the neighborhood.
College Moms in Prayer – meets two mornings a month to pray for college students in our congregation.
First Flicks – gathers monthly to discuss a current movie.
Men’s Breakfast – Men of all ages gather monthly on a Thursday at 7:00 a.m. for a hot breakfast and informal conversation.
Women’s Book Groups – two different groups; both meet monthly on a weekday evening.
Afternoon Circle – group of older women who gather six times a year at various locations for coffee, dessert, and a program.
Read Pray Love and Read Pray Love 2 – These two groups each meet monthly for spiritual formation and companionship.
Grace Circle — Adults meet twice each month for discussion of some faith-related reading, prayer, and fellowship.
Wednesday Morning Bible Study — meets weekly for much of the year for Bible study.
Friends at First— Active seniors gather quarterly for fellowship and cultural outings.
Couples Salon – gathers quarterly for a potluck meal and conversation in a home.
Single or Solo — new in May 2018
The First Church community gathers on Sunday mornings after worship for fellowship, and First Church parents gather once a month before worship for a Parent Coffee. Both are opportunities to get some coffee and a bite to eat, catch up with old friends, and meet new ones.
Retreats, day trips, and outings are another element of our community life together and offer a chance to relax our minds and bodies and restore our spirits. Every fall, First Church women participate on an overnight women’s retreat, typically in a natural setting an hour away. The church offers occasional day trips and field trips, e.g,. to a museum or theatrical performance downtown. Family Camp is another retreat of sorts – a chance for First Church families to spend a weekend in early August on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.
Our Fighting Methodist softball team is another fellowship opportunity—both for the players and the fans. This coed team plays in the Evanston summer recreation league from April to July, usually weekly.
